Class discussions emphasizing the compositional relationships of abstract and representational art will help the representational painter make the leap into abstract art. Familiarity with the use of acrylic or oil paints is the only experience required. We will work on several paintings at the same time over a two day period.

In Hollywood's Golden Age, directors were considered to be hired hands rather than great artists, but that is a misconception. Alfred Hitchcock, John Ford, and Billy Wilder were comfortable working in popular genres - Hitchcock became synonymous with horror and suspense, Ford with Westerns, and Wilder with dark comedy. But each has created something far more enduring than popular entertainment as their legacy: works of profound truth and indelible beauty. In this course, students will be asked to screen a movie by one director at home each week (DVDs can be purchased or rented) - Vertigo, by Hitchcock (with Kim Novak and James Stewart), The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, by Ford (with John Wayne, James Stewart, and Lee Marvin), and Sunset Blvd., by Wilder (with Gloria Swanson and William Holden). The first class will be an introduction, and each following week will focus on one director, with clips screened from selected other works.

The work of known artists is utilized to illustrate a variety of issues and approaches during our sessions together.

The paintings will start with color ideas rather than from a model or motif. Materials and sizes at the artists' discretion, ie. paper or panels depending upon the media used.

Monotype printing is ideal for the painter who would like to produce a body of work on paper. Monoprinting also opens up the contemporary possibility of stepping away from formal easel painting. This workshop will demonstrate the basic techniques to make a successful monotype print. Some of these techniques include the process of painting on a surface suitable for monoprinting, operating a printing press, and preparing paper for printing. Examples of artists' work that employs monoprinting will be introduced. Students should come to class with an experimental outlook. All levels of painting experience are welcome from the beginner to advanced painter.

Hinton writes, "I teach to not only share my knowledge of art, but to act as a catalyst and guide for students of painting and drawing. My students, who come from diverse backgrounds and levels, teach me about the many possibilities and approaches to art making. Having an artistic discourse in regard to technical demonstrations, the language of art, and the significance of work by other artists not only makes my own approach to art making more clear, but gives me a better understanding of how students can expand upon and grow as individuals from their work."

In this course we will be studying and applying many of the fundamental techniques of plein air painting. Together, we will investigate light and its effect on our visual field and how to translate that onto a canvas. We will not employ formulas; there is no correct way to paint and no such thing as a mistake. It is my goal to equip you with the tools necessary for a lifetime of exploration with plein air painting. This workshop includes morning access to the studio during non-class time. All levels welcome.

Play with letters, words, papers, inks and found objects and discover your own unique images. Through a series of parallel visual and verbal activities including book-design, poem-making, monoprinting, lettering and collage, students generate the materials from which to create a handmade book. The form and content of the book are not pre-conceived, but discovered as students construct their books on the space of each page and in the sequence of time. The books will be filled with beautiful images and surprising revelations. This workshop is for experienced artists and writers, as well as for beginners. It's a wonderful class for family members to take together. Children must be at least eight. Its methodology also makes it eye-opening for teachers. Of this class, one student wrote, In Image-Making the integration of the visual and the verbal happens as if by magic. In this class you are in the hands of experts."

Collage is a layering of thoughts and ideas as well as of paper, printed materials, graphite and paint. To the collagist, the very gathering of materials adds yet another layer of meaning. This workshop will explore basic materials and techniques used in collage and mixed media pieces. The emphasis will be on ways to apply a variety of techniques to mixed-media collage while developing a personal style. Demonstrations and discussions will encourage participants to rediscover or develop methods of layering images, paper, paint, and glue. There will be assignments provided for those seeking direction or help in overcoming creative blocks; other students may work independently on their own projects. Bring materials to class that inspire or that you would like to work with. Some additional materials will be made available for further exploration. A materials list is available for those not familiar with the medium.
