About Provincetown
map
Provincetown is the last community located at the tip of Cape Cod. Although Provincetown was not founded until 1727, The Mayflower docked for the first time in the Provincetown harbor in 1602 and is the official first landing of the pilgrims.

Over the years during the 18th century, the town's population fluctuated along with the price of fish. Aside from fishing there was farming which was the next most important thing and there were some salt works and one mill.

A wealth of art and preserved momentous buildings combined with the lure of the sea help Provincetown to maintain a vast tourist and summer home industry. Provincetown offers history, shopping, great restaurants and the smells and sounds of the ocean from all directions.

The Painterly Print: Monoprinting Workshop with Megan Hinton

Monotype printing is ideal for the painter who would like to produce a body of work on paper. Monoprinting also opens up the contemporary possibility of stepping away from formal easel painting. This workshop will demonstrate the basic techniques to make a successful monotype print. Some of these techniques include the process of painting on a surface suitable for monoprinting, operating a printing press, and preparing paper for printing. Examples of artists' work that employs monoprinting will be introduced. Students should come to class with an experimental outlook. All levels of painting experience are welcome from the beginner to advanced painter.

Megan Hinton's paintings and works on paper have been exhibited throughout North America. She shows her work at the South Wharf Gallery in Nantucket, MA and The William Scott Gallery in Provincetown, MA. Hinton holds degrees from Ohio Wesleyan University, The School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and New York University. She has been awarded the Dorothy Getz fellowship from Ohio Wesleyan, the C-Scape Dune Shack artist's residency from the Provincetown Compact and two print studio fellowships from the Women's Studio Workshop in the Catskills of New York. In 2011, Hinton had her first solo museum show at the Cape Cod Museum of Art and a three-person exhibition at PAAM. She is an avid traveler and admirer of the ocean, both of which inform her work. www.meganhinton.com

Hinton writes, "I teach to not only share my knowledge of art, but to act as a catalyst and guide for students of painting and drawing. My students, who come from diverse backgrounds and levels, teach me about the many possibilities and approaches to art making. Having an artistic discourse in regard to technical demonstrations, the language of art, and the significance of work by other artists not only makes my own approach to art making more clear, but gives me a better understanding of how students can expand upon and grow as individuals from their work."

MARGARET CHO
Beginning with her early days on the scene in SoCal, comedian Margaret Co has always been the Agent Provocateur of stand up. Never one to shy away from a difficult, or even 'taboo' topic, there is no subject off limits. Her socially aware brand of comedy has made her both a thought leader as well as a teacher to those with open minds and open hearts. An accomplished performer in all formats, Cho could be called the "Queen of all Media," having conquered the worlds of film, television, books and theatre. She has two Grammy Award nominations for Best Comedy Album under her belt, one for Revolution (2003) and the other for Cho Dependent (2010). Her tours are immediate sell-outs, and she's had two shows debut Off-Broadway (I'm The One That I Want and The Sensuous Woman). She has made an indelible mark in television, starting in 1994 with the network comedy All American Girl, followed by one of the first "reality sitcoms" to air on VH1, The Cho Show. Margaret currently stars on the Lifetime series Drop Dead Diva, now in its fourth season. The film and DVD releases of her stand up have broken records literally, with I'm The One That I Want holding the title for 'most money grossed per print' for an independent film. Her other releases, which Cho fans collect and swap with zeal, include Notorious C.H.O (2001), Assassin (2005), Revolution (2003), Beautiful (2009) and Cho Dependent (2011). Along with her many accolades for her entertainment career, Margaret has been widely recognized for her work in the non-profit sector, lending her name, time and tireless work ethic to several charities, especially those involving gay rights and anti-bullying campaigns. With the recent release of her 6th concert film, Cho Dependent, Margaret shows once again that she hasn't lost any of her well-loved edge. The Grammy nominated ed CD of the same name was widely praised for Cho's songwriting as well as her musicianship, and the DVD goes one step further, featuring songs from the album interwoven into the thought provoking stories she tells. Honest, passionate and hilarious, Margaret Cho is at her very best.

MARILYN MAYE with Billy Stritch
Seth Rudetsky's BROADWAY IN PROVINCETOWN series presents Marilyn Maye with Billy Stritch at the piano. In the years since Marilyn Maye first appeared in the spotlight as a tiny pre-teen vocalist in a series of amateur contests in Topeka, Kansas, she has received an endless stream of kudos. The late Johnny Carson called her a "Super Singer". Ella Fitzgerald dubbed her "The greatest white female singer in the world." The Houston Chronicle termed her "A National Treasure." And the prestigious Smithsonian Institution chose her recording of Too Late Now (from her RCA Lamp Is Low album) for inclusion in its Best Performers of the Best Compositions of the 20th Century permanent collection, along with such other singing greats as Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland. Add 76 appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, a Grammy nomination in the mid-Sixties as Best New Artist, a bevy of awards reflecting her showmanship, and you have an illustrious singing career that is still going strong after a life-time spent entertaining audiences who are now amazed to discover she still exudes the vocal strength and stamina of a singer half her age. Throughout her career, Marilyn has worked with the best talents in the music business, such as the late Peter Matz, who both arranged and conducted her Smithsonian-enshrined album, The Lamp is Low, the esteemed arranger, Don Costa, as well as Manny Album and Don Sebesky, two other highly-regarded arrangers. She also appeared with Johnny Carson in a number of large venue concerts, sang with the Phoenix Symphony under the baton of Doc Severinsen and, more recently, was the featured singer with both the Philadelphia Pops Orchestra and the Florida Symphony Orchestra at the behest of Peter Nero, who was the pops conductor. âMarilyn Maye sets the standard for the way any jazz, pop, or big band singer would like to sound,â Nero said when introducing Marilyn to the Philadelphia audience. And no one who has ever heard this songbird sing, whether with an orchestra, a trio or just a lone piano, would disagree. She has a command of the stage that can only come from having spent a lifetime of performing live, without the electronically-enhanced recording studio produced gibberish that has become the unfortunate musical standard of the last decade. In 2006, in an ironic twist of fate, Marilyn was once again âdiscoveredâ when she appeared as a special guest of The Mabel Mercer Society at New York's renowned Rose Hall at Lincoln Center. She followed this with, not only a second Mercer concert and a performance at the annual Cabaret Convention at Lincoln Center, but a series of glowingly-reviewed performances at New Yorkâs Metropolitan Room. As a result of this resurgence in popularity, Marilyn has never been busier. In the intervening years she has received a bevy of awards for her performances and has appeared in the nation's top nightclubs from California to New York, always delivering her best to her audiences from whom she more often than not receives a standing ovation and invariably earning high praise from the reviewers. Thus, as the musical magic of Marilyn Maye marches on, so do the glowing reviews. This was the case when Marilyn appeared for a week of appearances at The Metropolitan Room in October, 2010, and once again wowed The Big Apple's critics with her new show. "Exclamations of adoration regularly erupted at Friday's opening-night performance of Marilyn Maye's new show, 'Her Own Kind of Broadway,' at the packed Metropolitan Room. Ms. Maye, who personifies a hardy, upbeat show-business trouper, swung Broadway standards in a dark, honeyed voice untouched by the years. Again and again, Ms. Maye embraced show tunes that beat the drums for savoring the moment, wrapping her rich, robust voice around perky, cheerleading lyrics with an earthy conviction that revitalized their feel-good truisms." (Stephen Holden, New York Times, October 12, 2010) Audiences who, from coast-to-coast and all points in between, have been wowed by Marilynâs unforgettable performances of today and yesterday. As Will Friedwald summed up in his October 15, 2010, Wall Street Journal review of Marilyn's performance at The Metropolitan Room: "Marilyn Maye is pretty much every singer you ever wanted to hear: She has the rhythm and musicianship of a great jazz singer, the projection and personality of a heavyweight Broadway diva, and creates the intimate bond with her audiences that we demand from a cabaret artist. Her current show at the Metro stresses show tunes and, at more than 90 minutes, still didnât seem nearly long enough." Sponsored by Cape Air, Jet Blue and The Anchor Inn Guest House.

The Pilgrims' Original Landing Spot - Provincetown
It’s the end of the line as far as Cape Cod goes. The farthest north you can go before reaching the ocean; Provincetown may be the last stop on Route 6 but it should be one of the first on your visit to the Cape. It is a small town filled with culture, art, and a lot of fishing history.
